If you want length and shape beyond what your natural nails can grow, you’ve probably weighed gel extensions against acrylics. They can look similar at a glance, but they’re made very differently — and at The Shade, we made a deliberate choice: we offer sculpted gel extensions, not acrylic. Here’s the honest comparison, and why we chose gel.
What are gel extensions? (what we offer)
Gel extensions add length using a flexible, lightweight gel that’s sculpted over the natural nail and cured under light. The finish is glossy, natural-looking, and noticeably lighter on the hand than acrylic. Because gel has a little flex to it, it tends to move with your natural nail rather than fighting it — which is part of why it feels so comfortable.
What are acrylics? (what we don’t offer)
Acrylics are created by combining a liquid and a powder that hardens into a rigid extension. They’re known for being very tough, but they’re also harder and heavier on the nail, and the application involves stronger-smelling products. That rigidity is exactly why we don’t offer them — we prefer a lighter, more natural result that flexes with your nail.
Side by side
- Look & feel: gel is lighter, more flexible, and more natural-looking; acrylic is harder and more rigid.
- Comfort: gel moves with your nail; acrylic stays stiff.
- Finish: gel has a naturally glossy, refined look.
- Maintenance: like any extension, gel needs a fill every two to three weeks as your nails grow.
Why we chose gel
Our whole approach is about results that look and feel like you — just elevated. Sculpted gel gives length and strength while staying light and natural, and it pairs perfectly with our dry, e-file prep, which helps it bond cleanly and wear beautifully. For the look we’re known for, gel simply wins.
What about nail health?
With any extension, the biggest factor in keeping your natural nails happy isn’t the product — it’s the prep and the removal. Gentle dry prep and careful professional removal protect the natural nail far more than the type of extension. That’s why we prep dry and never rush a removal.
Will gel extensions damage my natural nails?
Not when they’re applied and removed properly. Damage usually comes from picking extensions off or aggressive filing — both of which we avoid with our dry technique and careful professional removal.
